A ridge vent is a piece of ventilation equipment that helps prevent heat from building up in your attic. You don’t see ridge vents from the ground, but they’re vital components of a well-functioning and properly structured roof.

These vents are installed at the peak of your roof, where the two sides of the roof come together at the top. Ridge vents work along with gable and soffit vents to create cyclical air flow within an attic.

Summer Attic Air Flow

Attics build up heat in the summer, which can cause damage to your roof, shorten the lifespan of your shingles and create structural problems with your home. The heat can cause goofing nails to loosen, premature roof degradation, and make shingles brittle and difficult or impossible to repair. Heat build-up also makes your air conditioner work harder.

Winter Attic Air Flow

In the winter, without proper ventilation, interior generated heat in your attic would become stuffy and probably develop mold. These conditions can cause wood to rot and lead to structural problems, not just on your roof but throughout all areas of your home. Mold also creates an unhealthy living environment.

In addition to removing hot air from attics, vents prevent moisture from building up which keeps mold from growing, protects the insulation from damage, and prevents structural problems from developing.
